However, in <a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fjournal.emwa.org%2Feu-regulations%2Fethical-challenges-in-acknowledging-professional-writing-support%2F&amp;data=04%7C01%7Crobyn.foster%40aspire-scientific.com%7Ced8e55b0e24a42e69d4808d8c44827f8%7C3872fc3201a64c68b5dcb8441b5e5c1a%7C0%7C0%7C637475161473981585%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=jfE2xnXlTAvZSS%2BiBmjBGzfVIOqSFPHRmNyVHk6fMZs%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a recent article<\/a> published in <a href=\"https:\/\/journal.emwa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Medical Writing<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>Blair R. Hesp and Marissa Scandlyn suggest criteria for identifying and appropriately acknowledging <em>all<\/em> professional medical writers who have made substantial contributions to manuscript development, particularly those who are not directly employed by the supporting agency.<\/p>\n<p>Namely, Hesp and Scandlyn propose that individual professional medical writers should be personally acknowledged if they have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>made a substantial contribution to drafting the outline or full first draft of a publication, or<\/li>\n<li>provided a substantial intellectual contribution to publication development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The authors suggest that benefits of this approach will include increased transparency by way of public disclosure and discoverability of any potential conflicts of interest, and appropriate recognition for contractors\u2019 skill and responsibility undertaken, which may have implications for their career advancement.<\/p>\n<p>However, they note that the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.icmje.org\/recommendations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICMJE<\/a>) recommends seeking written permission from those named in the acknowledgements, as it implies endorsement of the content and the policies and procedures followed.
