In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/ese.arphahub.com\/article\/54172\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">viewpoint article<\/a> published in <a href=\"https:\/\/ese.arphahub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>European Science Editing<\/em><\/a>, members of the Medical Publishing Insights and Practices (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpip-initiative.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MPIP<\/a>) initiative Steering Committee share their perspectives on the potential benefits, and challenges, of publishing industry-sponsored research open access.<\/p>\n<p>The authors highlight several benefits of publishing medical research open access, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>facilitating engagement of a wider community, strengthening public interest and awareness of current advances in science<\/li>\n<li>enabling healthcare professionals to keep up to date with advances that inform patient care and to access articles for use in teaching or policy papers to help advocate for their patients<\/li>\n<li>reducing duplication of existing research, which accelerates the progress of science<\/li>\n<li>improving the perception of transparency and increasing the credibility of the research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The authors note that, alongside the main article, supplementary materials should be published open access to maximise benefits for the reader.<\/p>\n<p>Open access publishing models and licenses vary widely in how quickly research can be disseminated. Publishing via the gold open access route with a CC-BY <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Creative Commons license<\/a> offers both free and immediate access to the article and allow the research to be shared and reused. However, publishing routes may be restricted depending on the funding source: most medical journals with a high impact factor (&gt;15) do not currently permit pharmaceutical companies to publish under a CC-BY license.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The authors note that such restrictions have hampered the credibility of, and trust in, industry-sponsored research.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>MPIP, a collaboration between industry members and the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ismpp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ISMPP<\/a>), aims to tackle such issues, including through the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpip-initiative.org\/transparencymatters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Transparency Matters<\/a>\u2019 initiative that highlights the importance of transparency in reporting industry-sponsored research.<\/p>\n<p>Encouragingly, there are promising signs of progress. Although few pharmaceutical companies mandate full open access to their data, others are introducing <a href=\"https:\/\/thepublicationplan.com\/2020\/09\/04\/open-access-publishing-of-pharma-sponsored-research-insights-from-a-scientific-publications-lead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open access policies<\/a> that aim to improve the discoverability and accessibility of their research.
