As reported in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-02134-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">news article<\/a> published by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nature<\/a><\/em>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coalition-s.org\/coalition-s-develops-rights-retention-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rights Retention Strategy<\/a>\u00a0will &#8220;safeguard researchers&#8217; intellectual ownership rights,&#8221; empowering those supported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coalition-s.org\/funders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cOAlition S organisations<\/a> to publish in their journal of choice \u2013 including subscription journals.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coalition-s.org\/addendum-to-the-coalition-s-guidance-on-the-implementation-of-plan-s\/principles-and-implementation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plan S<\/a> roadmap includes three routes to achieve full and immediate open access, involving publishing in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>open access journals or platforms<\/li>\n<li>subscription journals under <a href=\"https:\/\/thepublicationplan.com\/2020\/02\/20\/draft-guidance-from-coalition-s-supports-transformative-journals-transition-to-full-open-access\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">transformative agreements<\/a><\/li>\n<li>subscription journals, with the article made openly available in a repository.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The latter involves \u2013 as a minimum \u2013 embargo-free availability of an author accepted manuscript (AAM) under a <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CC-BY licence<\/a> or equivalent. However, publishers often prohibit such sharing by requiring authors to sign exclusive publishing agreements. This is where the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coalition-s.org\/rights-retention-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rights Retention Strategy<\/a>\u00a0comes into play.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">cOAlition S funders will stipulate in their grant conditions that, for original research that they have funded, a CC-BY licence is applied to all AAMs or versions of record (VoR) deposited to meet the Plan S requirements.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>cOAlition S hope that, with these grant conditions taking legal precedence over any publishing agreements, subscription publishers will amend their policies to allow free and immediate sharing of AAMs or VoRs. Marc Schiltz (President of Science Europe and Chair of the cOAlition S Leaders Group) has emphasised the importance of immediate sharing of research, arguing that the <a href=\"https:\/\/thepublicationplan.com\/2020\/03\/31\/covid-19-stimulates-innovations-in-open-science-and-publishing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19 crisis<\/a> has revealed embargo periods to be \u201cindefensible\u201d. Will embargo periods for scholarly publications become a thing of the past?
