Recently, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ismpp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP)<\/a> conducted a survey about strategies for deciding authorship order. Releasing the <a href=\"https:\/\/ismpp-newsletter.com\/2020\/03\/31\/poll-results-the-authorship-order-dilemma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">results in the MAP Newsletter<\/a>, most of the respondents favoured objective scoring of contributions as the best approach.<\/p>\n<p>Discussing the results, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ericywong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Wong<\/a> notes that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icmje.org\/recommendations\/browse\/roles-and-responsibilities\/defining-the-role-of-authors-and-contributors.html#one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) authorship criteria<\/a> provide clear guidance on who does \u2013 and who does not \u2013 qualify to be an author, and further recommendations are available in <a href=\"https:\/\/annals.org\/aim\/fullarticle\/2424869\/good-publication-practice-communicating-company-sponsored-medical-research-gpp3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GPP3<\/a>. However,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cThere is currently no single widely accepted methodology to make authorship order decisions\u2026\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The survey asked how respondents would look to resolve a scenario where multiple people believed they should be first author based on their contributions. Of the 89 respondents to the poll:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sixty-five percent opted to systematically list out author contributions, assigning an objective weight to each type of activity, with the total weighted score for each author used to determine author order.<\/li>\n<li>Thirty-five percent chose to share lead authorship, listing the authors alphabetically and indicating that those authors contributed equally.<\/li>\n<li>None voted to decide the author order based on experience or renown, or voted that the study sponsor should make the decision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wong emphasises that whatever approach is taken, how and why the decision has been made needs to be clear to authors. He also highlights that the <a href=\"https:\/\/ismpp-newsletter.com\/2019\/11\/05\/its-not-who-you-are-its-what-you-do-determining-authorship-for-industry-sponsored-publications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ISMPP Author Algorithm Task Force<\/a> is currently developing a standardised framework for assessing author contributions that could help to promote a consistent approach to resolving the author order question.
