In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/impactofsocialsciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London School of Economics Impact Blog<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/impactofsocialsciences\/2025\/04\/04\/can-ai-make-research-more-open\/\">article<\/a>, Niki Scaplehorn and Henning Schoenenberger, both at Springer Nature, describe how generative AI could play a pivotal role in reshaping how data are shared, potentially revolutionising open science.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hurdles to data sharing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The COVID-19 pandemic marked a <a href=\"https:\/\/thepublicationplan.com\/2021\/05\/12\/open-science-is-accelerated-as-a-result-of-the-covid-19-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turning point<\/a> for open science, with global collaboration and rapid data sharing accelerating breakthroughs. Yet, Scaplehorn and Schoenenberger highlight that there are still considerable challenges to data sharing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a lack of consistent guidance and struggles to align with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.go-fair.org\/fair-principles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAIR standards<\/a><\/li>\n<li>confusing and overlapping data sharing policies<\/li>\n<li>cultural barriers<\/li>\n<li>a lack of recognition for data sharing, code publication, and protocol documentation in academia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.springernature.com\/gp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Springer Nature<\/a> saw compliance with data sharing requirements jump from 51% to 87% simply by asking authors to justify why they hadn\u2019t deposited data prior to article acceptance. Scaling this approach, however, demands time and manpower. According to Scaplehorn and Schoenenberger, here, generative AI shows potential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How can AI benefit data sharing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The authors call for a \u201cproduct\u201d mindset that treats AI open science tools as services designed around researchers\u2019 needs, rather than top-down mandates or administrative burdens.
