Publishers will now register retraction notices with Crossref, and <a href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Retraction Watch<\/a> will continue to update the database. Crossref\u2019s dataset also contains over 14,000 retracted articles, meaning that the combined database will be the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/impactofsocialsciences\/2023\/09\/27\/making-retraction-data-freely-accessible-why-crossrefs-acquisition-of-the-retraction-watch-database-is-a-big-step-forward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">largest of its kind<\/a>, comprising around 50,000 retractions. This combination of volume, metadata, and open access will be a first and is an approach that Crossref and Retraction Watch hope will ensure sustainability in the long term.<\/p>\n<p>This sustainability is important as the volume of research articles continues to grow. The retraction of inaccurate publications is <a href=\"https:\/\/thepublicationplan.com\/2023\/01\/12\/retracted-papers-are-we-doing-enough-to-put-discredited-research-to-rest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vital<\/a> to maintaining the integrity of the scientific record.
