In <a href=\"https:\/\/upstream.force11.org\/flowcharts-from-the-f11-cope-data-publishing-ethics-working-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an article for Upstream<\/a>, FORCE11-COPE Research Data Publishing Ethics Working Group&#8217;s member Iratxe Puebla presents a series of practical flowcharts, based on the group\u2019s recommendations, which aim to help those dealing with such issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A force for change<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/force11.org\/groups\/research-data-publishing-ethics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FORCE11 Research Data Publishing Ethics Working Group<\/a> was established in 2021 as a multi-stakeholder effort to support data publishers \u2014 including journals and data repositories \u2014 in handling ethical concerns raised during the publication process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coping with concerns<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As Puebla reports, the group <a href=\"https:\/\/publicationethics.org\/news\/cope-collaboration-force11-working-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">collaborated with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)<\/a> to develop recommendations around 4 key areas of possible ethical concern:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>authorship and contribution<\/strong> conflicts<\/li>\n<li><strong>legal and regulatory<\/strong> restrictions<\/li>\n<li><strong>rigour<\/strong> (or completeness of datasets)<\/li>\n<li>and potential <strong>risks<\/strong> associated with data release.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Following this initial work, the group developed tools to help data publishers to implement the guidance and embed it into everyday practice. As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org\/2022\/10\/20\/force11-cope-release-recommendations-on-data-publishing-ethics\/#:~:text=This%20led%20to%20the%20formation,viewpoints%20of%20repositories%20and%20publishers.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Scholarly Kitchen<\/a>, the group recognised that the \u2018legwork\u2019 of handling ethical issues is performed by teams at journals and data repositories of varying sizes, with correspondingly variable levels of support and resources. To this end, they produced practical, easy-to-use flowcharts to accompany the recommendations and aid these teams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Workable ethics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The group produced 8 flowcharts based on the 4 areas of concern identified in the recommendations (a pre- and a post-publication flowchart for each area). These are freely available via the COPE <a href=\"https:\/\/publicationethics.org\/news\/ethical-concerns-data-publication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Puebla and the Working Group hope that the flowcharts will be useful to those working in data publishing.
