In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-022-04245-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Nature News<\/em> article<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/holly-else-b381232b\/?originalSubdomain=uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Holly Else<\/a> reported that new software solutions are now being tested that may detect paper mill activity and <a href=\"https:\/\/thepublicationplan.com\/2022\/11\/29\/spotting-fake-images-in-scientific-research-insights-from-science-integrity-consultant-elisabeth-bik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">image manipulation<\/a> in submitted manuscripts.<\/p>\n<p>The International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stm-assoc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STM<\/a>), in a joint effort with publishers and scholarly analytics providers, are developing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-01410-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">common standards for software tools<\/a>, which will form part of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stm-assoc.org\/stm-integrity-hub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STM Integrity Hub<\/a>. The hub will contain three online tools to detect the following publication ethics violations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>submissions from paper mills, based on ~70 indicators<\/li>\n<li>duplicate submission (manuscript submission to multiple publishers)<\/li>\n<li>image manipulation (potentially fabricated figures).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <em>Nature News <\/em>article outlined how large publishers such as Elsevier, Taylor &amp; Francis, and Frontiers are currently testing two of these tools, to help address these important issues.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cThe problem is significant not just because of volume, but also because there are different types of paper mill, and they are all highly adaptive.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2013 Sabina Alam, Director of Publishing Ethics and Integrity, Taylor &amp; Francis, UK <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It is hoped that the first two screening tools will be more widely available early in 2023.
