Despite progress in recent years, women are still under-represented in STEM. Per a <a href=\"https:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/ark:\/48223\/pf0000253479\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNESCO report<\/a>, just 35% of students in STEM-related fields of study are female, and gender differences in STEM education present at a young age during early childhood education. These trends are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aauw.org\/resources\/research\/the-stem-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perpetuated<\/a> by gender stereotypes, male-dominated cultures, and fewer STEM role models for girls, among other factors.<\/p>\n<p>The UN is giving this issue special attention as part of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/development-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/a>. By marking this day, the UN is seeking to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>improve women\u2019s access to full employment and decent work<\/li>\n<li>improve gender equality<\/li>\n<li>reduce the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-00387-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gender pay gap<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The medical communications industry is not immune to these issues. <a href=\"http:\/\/medcommsnetworking.com\/docs\/paramount_survey_june2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">As of 2020<\/a>, there was a 9.1% gender wage gap, with women earning \u00a34,372 less per year on average than men.<\/p>\n<p>By increasing female representation in medical research and medical communications, we are better placed to ensure that our industry is representative of the patients who participate in clinical trials and will benefit from this research\u2014deepening the relevance of our work and its impact.<\/p>\n<p>The theme for the 2022 International Day of Women and Girls in Science is \u2018Agents of Change\u2019.
